This little girl makes me laugh. If all that I did all day was to watch Emily, I would still never have a dull moment. She has such a personality, such sass. It is amazing how young their personalities surface. Emily is already asserting her independence, and she's barely 1! She doesn't like to hold hands any more, and she tries to buckle her car seat and wipe her own nose. She loves to pretend to talk on the phone. She's too young for phone calls! Emily received her first hair cut recently when I finally took scissors to her head and cut off the tail.
Emily has been very good at communicating what she wants even though she knows very little sign language. She love to sign "all done" after a meal, and she is starting to say the intonation at least. She points, she gets out a cup, or she'll just come whine at me, and I have a pretty good idea of what she wants. She can say "Mom," "hi," and, more recently, "shoes." Of course that would be her first real word! She loves shoes!
My baby is also a social butterfly. She charms everyone around her with her coy little smiles and her friendly waves. She'll talk and talk, just a little murmur, and point occasionally as she presses her point. At church, she is happiest when she has another baby to share toys with. Today she laid on her belly with a two-year-old boy looking at books and talking about the pictures. She loves to share and help, like cleaning up. She even grabs Constance's favorite toys if they're laying around to see how Constance will react. If Constance gets violent, Emily will run, but if Constance just gets sad or, even better, actually asks Emily for them, Emily has no problem handing them over, and she looks so proud of herself! I have also noticed that she likes to sing. I'll hum or whistle or sing something, and she starts singing, sometimes copying and sometimes coming up with her own little song. She also likes to copy, especially my frequent sighs, and we make a game of it.
Yesterday Emily was in the shower. The little pixie would get to the edge of the water flow (out of the water), turn around, back up a smidgeon, then stick her butt into the water. Then she would laugh and get out of the water again. I hired a babysitter to watch the kids the other day and as I said bye, Emily started waving to the babysitter and her brother and sister while she walked to the door with me! Sorry, Em. Not this time. She got fruit snacks, though, so she was okay. I even asked her last night, when she was starting to get cranky, if it was time for bed. She went looking for her blanket, laid down ever so nicely when I put her in her crib, and waved goodnight. Or rather kissed goodnight. She blows kisses at bedtime.
Of course, the quirk about Emily that makes me the happiest is when I walk in after being gone and she squeals when she sees me. That just fills my heart to the brim!
